Sometimes the best laid plans don't turn out to be so perfect as when they were first hatched.
Luckily for John Munro, he was able to reverse the direction of his Lake Erie swim - swimming from Crystal Beach, Ont. to Sturgeon Point, N.Y. to avoid dangerous storms - successfully completing his crossing.
It took Munro nine hours and 33 minutes Sunday to successfully swim the 20 kilometer distance. He came up on the U.S. shoreline just before 5 p.m.
Despite the change in direction, Munro said he still had very choppy waters to contend with.
"We had up to five-foot waves to plow through. but it all worked out in the end," said Munro.
The swim had been delayed several times from its original July 4 date. First, it had been delayed to ensure rescue crews on the American side were able to participate and then because of the storms.
"Two days before I started there up to 20 foot waves," Munro said. "Eight boats were overturned and one was lost."
Munro was also pleased to report that his swim had been picked up by several national media outlets, giving him more of an opportunity to raise funds for children with disabilities.
He went back into the water yesterday to train for a Lake Ontario crossing, tentatively scheduled for mid-August.
