John Munro retired from the Toronto Police Service in February 2000, after serving for 31 years. John and his wife, world renowned marathon swimmer  Vicki Keith, moved to the Kingston area in April of 2001. Both John and Vicki are very active as volunteers in the community. They are part time firefighters for Loyalist Township and serve on Amherst Island.

John has been a volunteer in various capacities for the past 25 years. Some of the organizations he has been involved with include Big Brothers, The Canadian Progress Club, Variety Village and a service club on Amherst Island called the Amherst Island Men’s Society. John was also the Swim Master who was responsible for overseeing the marathon swims of two young swimmers with disabilities, Ashley Cowan and Terri-Lynn Langdon. Both of these athletes were successful in completing a crossing of Lake Erie. John’s greatest passion is volunteering with children with physical disabilities in helping them become successful.

John was a swim pacer and training partner for Vicki on her last number of marathon swims. He was also a pacer for Carlos Costa, a marathon swimmer with a disability, who set several world records.

John is also a successful marathon swimmer. In the summer of 2001, he and Vicki completed the first ever tandem swim across Lake Ontario from Point Peninsula New York to Richardson Beach, a distance of 35 km.
